Welcome to the Sunday Travel Feature. Unlike the rest of my blog, I am dedicating Sundays to fulllength travel stories appearing in sections over consecutive Sundays.
These features are akin to travel articles you might see in magazines or newspapers. They are an opportunity for an in depth look at a destination both in photos and words.
Driving back from the highlands to Ubud, I felt stress return as we wove our way through congested traffic on narrow winding roads. I can't help but think about how tranquil the island was years ago. I know I shouldn't compare and I try not too, but it's difficult when the Bali I love is gone.
The people of Bali are still as gentle, kind and spiritual as ever. And this I keep foremost in my mind. Especially returning to Ubud, a place I hardly recognize. I'm glad this is a blog and not a magazine travel article as I wouldn't be able to tell it like it is. No advertisers or editors to please with only a rosy view.
Ubud is bursting at the seams. What was once a small laidback village that lost its electricity at sunset has exploded into a fivestar hotel mecca on its outskirts with clogged arteries to its heart. Like many other places, everyone is trying to make a buck on tourism. And who can blame them?
"You need transportation," men standing near parked cars echo. "You want guide," someone else asks. "Why not you eat here?" yet another encourages.
Despite the changes, we are staying at a wonderful somewhat isolated hotel, the Tegal Sari. We booked it directly with the hotel on the web after reading the reviews on TripAdvisor (love that site). We are not disappointed. It is superbly managed and inexpensive.

The hotel is about a mile from the center of town in the middle of rice fields. Building on former rice fields provides guests an intimate experience of watching workers plant, tend and harvest rice.
We are staying in a thatched bungalow and our terrace overlooks the fields. The cost of our room is $45 dollars, which includes air conditioning, daily maid service and breakfast. They have double rooms beginning at $20 that are lovely.
It's fascinating to watch the workers, but heartbreaking at the same since. Mostly women, their only pay is in rice for their families. They may not accumulate rice and sell it. No cash. Not even a dollar a day.
Indonesia is very poor and realizing how little most make in any profession, maybe four dollars a day, is inconceivable. The smiling rice workers arrive at sunup and leave at dusk.
We are spending two weeks in Ubud. First on our agenda is to attend at least two classic Balinese dance performances. Each dance tells a story. First, we go to a night performance of the Legong, a heavenly dance performed by elaborately dressed women.
The Barong is a mythical beast. The dance tells its story.

The dancers are accompanied by a gamelan orchestra and are performed in a temple. The night we attended it rained so we watched the performance in a covered, open air building.
Dancers are highly skilled and many have been performing for years. They and the musicians are revered, but unlike other professional dancers in the world, by day they work ordinary jobs and by night they dance, sharing a small portion of the tickets proceeds.
We also attended the Barong dance performed during the day. The barong is a mystical creature feared by all. We snuck behind stage and watched the performers arrive one by one to prepare their costumes and headdresses. Once their part is over they leave returning to work.
Besides eating out and enjoying the wonderful Balinese food we walked the tiny streets and just enjoyed people watching. One day we heard distant drumming and noticed the street was being closed off. People gathered and within about 15 minutes a procession passed up by. We were told it was a funeral procession.

Another activity we thoroughly enjoyed was visiting the Sacred Monkey Forest Sanctuary. Since the dense swath of jungle was located virtually at the back door of our hotel compound, we spent many hours there watching the escapades of the greyhaired Balinese macaques. These packs of thieves are incredibly resourceful and wise about grabbing a water bottle from an unsuspecting tourist or pinching peanuts from a bag or pocket.
Ubud is also the place to find yourself in case you are lost or a seasoned spiritual seeker.
I was curious what the local expatriate community thought and I heard comments ranging from "charlatan" to "she's a good friend" to "who?". There wasn't a consensus, but the book has attracted a whole other group of visitors.
I signed up for a cooking class that was limited to ten participants only to find a busload of American women in search of themselves were joining the class. Fifty people were a few too many for me, so I dropped out.
