Many UK tour operators are giving up on shorthaul destinations because they know they can be undercut by knowledgeable consumers prepared to book their own flights, hotels and car hire. I took package prices from five upmarket tour operators for a week's stay at luxury hotels in five popular destinations. I then compared them with the cost of putting together the same package myself.
In most cases I simply logged on to the airline and hotel websites or phoned hotels. To ensure I was comparing like with like, I added any relevant hotel taxes, meal extras and airport transfer costs that had been included in the tour operator's quote. They also pointed out that there are advantages in using an operator: high levels of personal service and expertise, provision of local reps to sort out problems, greater financial protection, the chance of hotel upgrades and, in some cases, the use of airport lounges.
Below are my comparisons. All prices are per person, based on two sharing, and include taxes. All prices are subject to change.
